Clearing out the back rooms

Posted by Bruce Crawford in bargains, clearnace, website, wobblers

It's amazing what you find when you have a clear out, and that is just as true for our shop as it would be for our homes!  We were making a bit of space in the back rooms, and we have come across odd bits of stock that were moved out of the shop to make way for new ranges at various points in the past.  Over the coming weeks we will get all the items photographed and listed online, and the bit you will most like to hear, discounted for clearance.  The first items will include several Sage rods, some Scott rods, as well as a few other rods.  The discounts are generous, and each discount will be listed on the product page.  Have a look in out Bargains Basket to see what we've got.  Remember that we have plenty of current ranges as well, so please have a look around the rest of the website.

Among the most fascinating items were the Ugly Duckling wobblers.  I have not come across them before, but they bear a passing resemblance to a Rapala I suppose.  I had to do a bit of research to find out more about these spinning lures, and I was amazed at what I found.  Perhaps I am showing my age as I was surprised to find a Facebook group dedicated to these little chaps.  They seem to be very popular on the continent, and seem effective for pike and perch, and I think the larger ones could be used for salmon.  They would be ideal for beginners as they are fairly cheap, so no great loss if they get snagged and lost.  That said, snagging should be rare as they are a floating lure.

Now, to start on my own home...

Landmark Day

We reached a landmark today, and we all feel quite pleased with ourselves.  The land mark is that we changed the domain name on our new website, and removed the password so it is there for all the world to see (and, we hope, shop from).  There has been a lot of work, and there is still plenty to do, but we feel that we have enough stock on to go live.  Of course, this the work doesn't stop here.  There will be a lot of back end work to keep the site fresh, and current, and of course we will be frantically picking and packing your orders, and getting them in the post for you.  We welcome any suggestions or comments (please send them by e-mail) and of course we look forward to your custom.  We will work hard to keep you up to date with what is going on in Dunchurch, both at Lyttles and with our associated company, Heart of England Fly Fishing School: it's not long until we kick off the winter fly-tying classes again.   Please subscribe to the blog via the RSS feed or keep checking in to see what's news and what's new, and of course look at our Facebook pages and twitter feeds if you can.

Progress

Bit by bit we are making progress towards getting the online shop live.  The Crystal River fly range is on the product database, and that is the largest single product group that we have.  It covers flies for trout, salmon, sea-trout, salt-water (warm and cold) and freshwater predator flies: now all we need is the photographs to go with the product descriptions.  This will take a while so we are going to go head down, no going out, no having fun for a few days while we crack this key job.  It's a dirty job (or at least time consuming and probably a bit dull) but we have got to do it, and I hope that you like the results.  At present we have a full description for some of the range, and over the coming months we will be adding descriptions for the remainder as and when we have time: we hope that they are of use and interest to you.

How Time Flies

How time flies!

I have suddenly realised that I have neglected the blog for a month.  That will serve as a useful lesson that we must keep adding news to the blog to keep all our friends and customers up to date as to what we are up to.  And we are up to plenty.

Work on the website continues.  What we initially thought could be a fairly quick process revealed itself to be more involved and drawn out than anticipated, but is coming together more easily than anticipated.  I don't expect that we will rule the world over night, but I really feel that we will make a success of this venture now.  There have been a few days of doubt and anguish, but the thing that we have invested most is time, time looking into how to get this as right as we can at the launch.  We hope we are close, but as has been mentioned before, this will be a work in progress, and there will be developments, tweaks and improvements as we go.

Apart from putting the online shop together Paul has been busy instructing, guiding and fishing mostly locally on Draycote, and is shortly heading north to the Deveron with a group from our associated company, Heart of England Fly Fishing School.  Conditions have been difficult on the Deveron (and on many of the rivers in Scotland) this year, and it is unlikely to improve next week, but if your line isn't in the water and all that!  Paul will be at the CLA Game Fair on Saturday visiting friends and contacts in the fishing and tying world.  Be sure to keep a look out for the Heart Of England Fly Fishing School Facebook page and twitter feed (@HoEFFS), and instagram (HOEFFS) page for news of the leviathan salmon that Paul and the team dredge from the depths of the Deveron!
