A size 14 pattern imitating a terrestrial Hawthorn fly. The body of the fly is black closed cell foam, which is tied in at the eye of the hook and segmented back two spaces and then allowed to hang over the hook bend in a detached style. The wing is a white poly yarn wing sloping backwards above the detached body; hair-trailing legs complete the fly. The natural hawthorn can be seen on the wing from late April to late May, often in large numbers. It tends to swarm in the vicinity of trees or bushes and all it takes is a breeze to blow them on to the water surface, where the trout will pick them up with relish.
