This pattern is tied on a size 16 hook and is a representation of the terrestrial Black Gnat. A black tail, slim black body, dark starling wings and a black hackle are the make up of this fly. Male swarms of this terrestrial species can often blown on to water where the trout are very fond of them. This fly is best presented drag free, to rising fish, but because of the trout fondness for them it can even bring up a trout when no naturals are on the water. Although this pattern does catch on lakes its main use would be for the river fisherman. This fly can be used, with confidence, from early spring to the end of October.
