Spent Mayfly Spinner

£1.16

This is tied on a size 8 dry fly hook and is a representation of the spinner (spent gnat) of the Ephemera Danica or Green Drake. The fly is fished dead drift in the surface film supported by the detached body and the spent hair wings. This pattern should be tried in the late afternoon or early evening when the trout seemed to have stopped rising to the Mayfly dun and instead are taking something almost invisible in the surface film. Takes can be quite subtle and slow, because the fish know this fly is now dead or dying and will not fly away and deprive them of a meal. This fly is best fished during the main hatch, which is usually between the middle of May and the middle of June.
